On September 1, 2010, my college bestie Shannon and I drove nine hours from western Pennsylvania to move to Davis Square, Somerville. I was starting graduate school in Boston the next week at Emerson College. The night of September 2nd, our new roommate, Hannah, dragged us (already homesick) to Orleans, the bar/restaurant right down the street from their apartment for trivia night.
Hannah's then-boyfriend, now-husband, Jeff, also lived a couple blocks away with three of his college friends, including Boris. They met us there and (after a somewhat long and winding road...) the rest was history!
It was a perfect, warm Friday evening - the second day of our vacation to Italy and Croatia.
Sara thought we were going to (leisurely) get ready, stroll over the Arno River to The Boboli Gardens and Piazzale Michaelangelo to take some sunset photos, enjoy some vino, and then go to dinner.
Little did she know, Boris had planned a beautiful proposal (complete with a photographer) in The Boboli Gardens at sunset. Our group got a late start walking over to the gardens because Sara was taking her time getting ready, enjoying some prosecco and doing her hair. By the time they got over to the garden gates -- it was closed 😥
Their group started walking back toward Piazzale Michaelangelo and Boris noticed that Sara was getting visibly, audibly cranky (i.e. hangry) wanting to stop for a cappuccino (or 🍷) and rest for a minute.
Boris decided to "audible" on his original plan, and as the rest of the group turned a corner off of a quiet little side street called Via del Canneto, he got down on one knee and proposed. It couldn't have been more perfect - a little oasis of calm and quiet in the middle of a bustling city on a Friday evening.
